Vairocana Buddha embodies the wisdom of all Buddhas. His hands are raised in Dharmachakra Mudra, the gesture of turning the wheel of the teachings. Vairocana means he who is like the sun, or radiating one. He wisdom comes from the realm of truth where all things are seen as they truly are.
Tibetans use a unique type of ornamental charm called a gau as an altar when travelling. It is a portable shrine in which the owner's personal deity can be kept. They usually contain prayer scarves, pictures of deities or the Dalai Lama, or other sacred items that the wearer holds dear.
This silver gau features Vairocana Buddha sitting on a lotus throne. The gau is about 1 1/8 inches long by 1 inch wide by 1/2 inch deep. It comes threaded with a black string for wearing.
Inside this gau, you can put anything that you hold sacred and would like to carry with you throughout your day, perhaps a photo, flower petals, or a lock of hair. If you would like, we will put a small fragment of a prayer flag inside for you. Just let us know.
When you wear this lovely gau, you carry the blessings of Vairocana, Buddha of radiating light, with you throughout your day. A great way to remember to stay focused on the highest teachings.
