This wall mounted brass and copper prayer wheel is 7 1/2 inches high by 7 1/2 inches wide. It sits in a wooden frame with decorative designs carved into it. Circling around the outside on the top and bottom of the wheel are the letters Om Mani Padme Hum. Om Mani Padme Hum, meaning the Jewel Within the Lotus, is the mantra of Avalokiteshvara, the embodiment of universal compassion. It is said to contain the entire path to enlightenment within it's syllables. The mantra helps the one who repeats it to achieve a deeper connection with their own divine consciousness.
In the center of the prayer wheel are the eight auspicious symbols (ashtamangalas) that represent the offerings presented by the gods to Buddha upon his attainment of enlightenment. These are the Victory Banner, the Parasol of Protection, the Conch, the Infinite Knot, the Wheel of Dharma, the Vase of Abundance, the Golden Fish, and the perfect and pure Lotus.
Tibetan prayer wheels contain a rolled up scroll printed with prayers, the most common being Om Mani Padme Hum. A prayer wheel can easily contain forty thousand mantras, and so, a few minutes of turning the prayer wheel will repeat the mantra millions of times. The act of spinning the wheel (in a clockwise direction so the mantra will pass before your eyes in the direction you would be reading it) brings merit and blessings. These blessings radiate out into the environment, filling the world and the heavens with sacred invocations and blessings for the benefit of all
